The Indie Fix: Proteus : Videogame News & Reviews | Bits 'n' Bytes ...

This post was meant to be about an old-school CRPG that has been in devel?op?ment (by some accounts) for over 15 years. After research?ing it for a while, I decided the wildly con?flict?ing infor?ma?tion, accu?sa?tions, and inter?net insan?ity relat?ing to that game made it a bit too? bizarre for me. I?ll just leave a link to that game?s blog here, and let you check it out for yourselves.

Instead I?ve decided to cover Pro?teus today.

In its cur?rent form, Pro?teus is a game about explo?ration. A quite, med?i?ta?tive expe?ri?ence of wan?der?ing through strange, alien land?scapes that are nev?er?the?less very famil?iar. Pro?ce?du?rally gen?er?ated worlds are laid out before the player with clean, sim?ple pixel graph?ics in a 3D envi?ron?ment. I?d like to tell you more about the game, about some of the fan?tas?tic things you may come across in the game world, but I think it?s bet?ter to let the player dis?cover these for them?selves. About all you can really do is run around, look at things, and take lovely lit?tle screen?shots, all while lis?ten?ing to the calm?ing and beau?ti?ful of David Kahaga. I would strongly encour?age fans of exper?i?men?tal elec?tronic music to check out his?site!

At an ear?lier point, Ed Key had men?tioned that Pro?teus would be a lite RPG game, sim?i?lar in some respects to Mor?rowind, but in pro?ce?du?rally gen?er?ated worlds and not nearly as com?plex. I?m not sure how much that will play into the final build of the game as it stands now, and despite my mas?sive love of Mor?rowind I?m not sure it needs to have such fea?tures. This is thus far about some?thing slower, some?thing more men?tal and less vis?ceral, and I like it that?way.

Pro?teus also recently made it into the finals for IndieCade, and by what I?ve seen and tried of the many excel?lent final?ists, it fits in well with these highly imag?i?na?tive?games.

You can down?load a very early build of the game here.

And you can check out the developer?s blog here.

And finally, the game?s actual site, which is just a pretty place?holder at the moment, but will hope?fully expand soon.
