(AP) ? With a formal dinner for the few, President Barack Obama is paying tribute to the many.

The president who opposed the Iraq war from its outset is thanking those who fought its battles by inviting in a small cross section of the million-plus who served there over the past nine years.

The faces of war are reflected in the 200 veterans and their guests attending Wednesday's dinner. They come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories, and span generations, gender and all five branches of the military.

There is a 24-year-old sailor from Colorado who spent just five months in Iraq before losing part of his right leg in a blast. There is a 31-year-old Air Force sergeant from Georgia who deployed to Iraq six times in five years and won the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The first person injured in the war, Marine Staff Sgt. Eric Alva of Texas, also was on the guest list. Alva, 41, had a leg amputated after stepping on a land mine just hours after the war began in 2003. He later revealed that he was gay and became a prominent advocate for ending the military's ban on openly gay service members.

A Gold Star wife, Kim Felts of Fayetteville, N.C., was to be seated next to first lady Michelle Obama. Felts' husband, 45-year-old Army Col. Thomas H. Felts, spent more than two decades in the military but had never served in combat before he volunteered to go to Iraq. He died in 2006 when a bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad.

In all, more than 4,500 Americans died in the Iraq war.

Felts, who was bringing along two of her four children, said the dinner was a fitting way to remember her husband, who "always enjoyed a good celebration." She also cast the dinner as an apt way to express the nation's thanks to Iraq veterans at a time when other American troops ? about 89,000 ? still are in harm's way in Afghanistan.

"It's a pretty grand affair, in my opinion," she said, adding that bigger events would be appropriate once all the service members are home from Afghanistan.

But some veterans already are pushing for a more expansive national expression of gratitude.

"One meal isn't nearly enough to extend the entire nation's gratitude," said Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. "Across the country, millions of Americans want to join the president and first lady in thanking Iraq veterans and their families."

Rieckhoff said in a written statement he was giving his seat at the dinner to Iraq veteran Angela Peacock, who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after the war and recently helped lead veterans in a big welcome-home parade in St. Louis.

The veterans' group has issued an open letter calling on the president to designate a National Day of Action to honor Iraq veterans with special events all around the country.

The Pentagon, for its part, says it would be inappropriate to have a big national-level event like a parade when so many still are serving in combat operations in Afghanistan. Many of those just home from Iraq no doubt will turn around and deploy to Afghanistan before combat there wraps up at the end of 2014.

In all, 2.38 million Americans have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars so far. More than 1 million have deployed more than once.

Americans have long wrestled with the best ways to remember wars and whom to honor through monuments, holidays, parades and other actions, says Florida State historian G. Kurt Piehler, author of "Remembering War the American Way." Presidents carefully calibrate the ways in which they memorialize past conflicts to be in sync with public sentiment.

Richard Nixon threw a huge gala for former Vietnam POWs. Harry Truman cheered at multiple parades honoring veterans of World War II. Andrew Johnson presided over the pageantry of a two-day review of Union troops at the end of the Civil War.

Piehler said the closest historical parallel to Wednesday's black-tie dinner was Nixon's gala honoring the former POWs in 1973. That was a much more extravagant event, the largest sitdown dinner in White House history. About 1,300 guests filled a huge red-and-yellow striped tent on the South Lawn for dinner and entertainment by Bob Hope, John Wayne, Sammy Davis Jr., Irving Berlin and other celebrities.

Veterans had the run of Nixon's White House, even posing for pictures on the bed in the Lincoln Bedroom. The day also gave a personal boost to Nixon, then under the cloud of the Watergate investigation.

Obama, for his part, has missed no opportunity to celebrate the end of an unpopular war, with frequent speeches, visits to troops and promises to ensure favorable treatment for returning veterans.

In the process, he is able to underscore that the war ended on his watch ? just as candidate Obama had promised.

One of the first things to do when you begin self-improvement is to check your attitude.

As you go through your day take some time and listen to your thoughts. What do you think about when you go shopping?

Would you label your thoughts as positive or negative? While shopping are you always worried about the price of products and your lack of sufficiant monies to shop the way you want?

As you go about your day thinking your thoughts. Do you think the people around you and the people you meet know your thoughts?

Although people will not know exactly what you are thinking, they will more or less know how you are feeling.

Our thoughts effect us and every one around us. When we go where we are known the people who know us can tell what kind of mood we are in. We are definitely not alone with our thoughts.

Thoughts are very powerful. They affect your general attitude. your attitude effects your appearance. Your thoughts are so powerful that they effect the people who you chose as friends and the people you chose to associate with.

A person with positive thoughts have invigorating effects on people they come in contact with. People who are with some one who has a positive attitude are usually energized by there thoughts.

At the same time if you are around people with a negative attitude you with feel your energy being sapped. Negative thoughts make you look gloomy and sad and can turn a happy occasion into a funeral wake.

Studies show that a positive attitude promotes better health. With a positive attitude you are able to handle stress and problems better than those with a negative attitude.

A good self-image comes from a positive attitude. Self- improvement comes from a good self-esteem. With a good attitude and a good self-image you can be unstoppable.

With a positive attitude you can effect many lives if a friend feels down, very often all they need is some one to listen to them. With a positive attitude you can usually cheer them up with out having to say a word.

A negative attitude has the opposite effect. A negative attitude has a twofold drawback. You feel bad about yourself and you make others feel the same way.

In the world we currently live it can be difficult to keep a positive attitude with so many news feeds which usually give us nothing but negative messages. A study shows that for every 14 things a parent says to his or her child, only one is positive. Sad, isn?t it.

You cannot stay away from negative things but you can carry a positive attitude by focusing on the good things in your life.

If positive attitude is great, why do people choose to adopt a negative attitude instead? One who carries a negative attitude may be actually sending a signal for attention. Feeling sad, angry, or gloomy is not wrong. It becomes unhealthy if you dwell on these thoughts for far too long.

(AP) ? A fire broke out Monday in the generator room of an Italian cruise ship, leaving it adrift off the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean, but causing no casualties, officials said.

The accident aboard the Costa Allegra occurred about six weeks after the Concordia, another Italian cruise ship owned by the same company, capsized off Italy, killing 25 people and leaving seven missing and presumed dead.

Asked about Monday's Costa Allegra accident, Italian Coast Guard Cmdr. Cosimo Nicastro told SkyTG24 TV that the ship's captain told Italian authorities the blaze was quickly extinguished.

"The passengers are fine," Nicastro said. But the fire left the cruise liner "without propulsion," meaning the ship, with 636 passengers and 413 crew members aboard, was adrift in the sea because the engines weren't working, he said.

But "the fire danger is over," Nicastro said.

Costa Crociere SpA, which is based in Genoa, Italy, said in a statement that its ship was about 20 miles (12.5 kilometers) from Alphonse Island, one of the atolls in the Seychelles, a nation of islands and atolls that is a popular tourist destination.

Officials said coast guard boats and an aircraft were being sent to the disabled ship.

Costa Crociere said in a statement that after the fire began in its Costa Allegra's electric generator room, "the special firefighting units intervened to extinguish it.

"The fire did not spread to any other area of the ship. There were no injuries or casualties," the statement said. It did not say what caused the fire.

The cruise company said that a general emergency alarm was "promptly sounded" as a precaution, and that all passengers and crew not involved in the emergency reach muster stations.

After the Concordia cruise ship struck a reef off Italy's tiny Tuscan island on Jan. 13, its captain was arrested and several other officials were placed under investigation. When the Concordia listed to one side, many people hadn't been evacuated on life boats and some jumped into the sea. Concordia passengers said that the order to evacuate came about an hour after the ship was speared by the reef and started taking on water.

On Monday, Italian coast guard officials dispatched cargo ships near the Costa Allegra to help.

The Seychelles coast guard and air wing mobilized, and an aircraft was flying over the ship late Monday evening, said Seychelles presidential spokeswoman Srdjana Janosevic. The island's port authority sent two tugs to the stricken ship.

"And there are fishing vessels in the vicinity, large ones, that are going to provide support as well," Janosevic said. "They have assistance coming to them.'"

The Allegra had left northern Madagascar, off Africa's southeast coast, on Saturday and was cruising toward the port of Victoria, Seychelles' capital, when the fire erupted. Costa said the Allegra had been due in Victoria on Tuesday.

The Allegra was built in Italian shipyards in 1992, is 188 meters (615-feet) long, has eight passenger decks and 399 cabins.

Israel nixes solar energy for Palestinians

Electricity from solar panels and wind turbines has revolutionized life in rural Palestinian herding communities: Machines, instead of hands, churn goat milk into butter, refrigerators store food that used to spoil and children no longer have to hurry to get their homework done before dark.

But the German-funded project, initiated by Israeli volunteers, is now in danger. Israeli authorities are threatening to demolish the installations in six of the 16 remote West Bank communities being illuminated by alternative energy, arguing the panels and turbines were installed without permits.

The German government has expressed concern and asked for clarifications - a rare show of displeasure from Israel's staunchest defender in Europe.

The dispute is more than just a diplomatic row. It goes to the core of mounting international criticism of Israel's policies in the 62 percent of the West Bank that remain under full Israeli control two decades after Palestinians were granted self-rule in a patchwork of territorial islands in the rest of the land.

The division of jurisdictions was meant to be temporary, but has been frozen in place as repeated peace talks deadlocked. The Palestinians claim all the West Bank, along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, for a state.

International monitors have warned that Israel is suppressing Palestinian development in the West Bank sector under its full control, known as "Area C," while giving preferential treatment to Israeli settlements. Most of the international community considers Israel's settlements in the West Bank illegal.

Israel's more than 300,000 settlers are already double the number of Palestinians in Area C, which would form the heart of any Palestinian state.

If Israel's policies are not stopped, "the establishment of a viable Palestinian state ... seems more remote than ever," European Union diplomats warned in an internal report last year.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said the division of authorities was agreed to by the Palestinians in the interim deals of the mid-1990s, and that Israel is ready to move forward.

"We of course want to continue with the negotiations, to reach further agreements with the Palestinians, but they have not been willing to do so," he said.

The Palestinians have said they won't resume talks without a freeze in settlement building, which they argue grabs lands they want for a state.

More than 90 percent of the West Bank's Palestinians live in the self-rule areas run by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. The economist has won international praise for building institutions of a state like police and courts in the areas he governs. Fayyad has tried to branch out into Area C, but hit a wall of Israeli rejections.

Palestinian government spokesman Ghassan Khatib said the donors are increasingly aware of the problem, but that "unfortunately, there isn't yet action, such as holding Israel accountable."

Perhaps the most vulnerable Palestinians in Area C are the goat and sheep herding families scraping a living from barren hills of the West Bank. Israel does not recognize their tiny communities, saying the herders are in the area illegally. Residents say their roots go back generations.

The hamlet of al-Thala, a community of 80 in the southern West Bank, had no electricity until last August when the German aid group medico and Comet-ME, a group of pro-peace Israeli scientists, set up solar panels there as part of a campaign to provide 30 communities in the area with solar and wind power.

Laub reported from Jerusalem. Associated Press writers David Rising in Berlin, Germany and Monika Scislowska in Warsaw, Poland, contributed reporting.

Mandela admitted to hospital in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG | Sat Feb 25, 2012 6:54am EST

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital on Saturday to be treated for a "long-standing abdominal complaint", intensifying concerns about the health of the 93-year-old anti-apartheid leader.

The government said Mandela needed specialist medical treatment although the ruling African National Congress (ANC) said his admission was not an emergency and did not involve surgery.

"There's no need for panic," ANC spokesman Keith Khoza told South Africa's e-News channel. "It was not an emergency admission. It was planned."

An ANC source told Reuters that Mandela, who is popularly known by his clan name, Madiba, was "not looking serious".

Mandela has been in poor health since spending nearly a week in Johannesburg's Milpark hospital just over a year ago with respiratory problems, and has not appeared in public since then.

He has spent the last year between his home in Johannesburg's northern suburbs and his ancestral village of Qunu in the impoverished Eastern Cape.

As South Africa's first black president, Mandela occupies a central position in the psyche of a country that was ruled by the 10 percent white minority until the first all-race elections in 1994.

Earlier this month, President Jacob Zuma and the central bank issued a new set of bank notes bearing his image.

Mandela has long since withdrawn from active participation in politics and public life in Africa's biggest economy, having stood down at the end of his first term in office in 1999.

His last major public appearance was in July 2010 at the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium.

Romney would raise eligibility age for Medicare

(AP) ? Four days before critical primary elections, Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney outlined a far-reaching plan Friday to gradually delay Americans' eligibility for Medicare as well as Social Security.

Romney said the shift, as people live longer, is needed to steer the giant benefit programs toward economic sustainability.

Speaking to the Detroit Economic Club ? in cavernous Ford Field, where the Detroit Lions football team plays ? he also made a play for primary election support in Michigan, which votes on Tuesday along with Arizona.

Romney said previous steps to toughen government emission standards had "provided a benefit to some of the foreign automakers" at the expense of American companies. He said future changes should be worked out cooperatively between government and industry.

Campaigning in the city where he was born, Romney described himself as "a car guy" who has a Ford Mustang and a Chevy pickup and whose wife, Ann, drives "a couple of Cadillacs." Aides said they were model year 2007 and 2010 SRX vehicles, one each registered in Massachusetts and California.

Romney said his proposals for Medicare and Social Security would begin in 2022, meaning no current or near-retirees would be affected. He also said he favors adjustments to curtail the growth of future benefits for the relatively well-to-do, so "lower-income seniors would receive the most generous benefits." He had described his Social Security proposals previously.

The two programs provide retirement and health care benefits to tens of millions of older Americans.

Beginning in 2022, Romney said, "we will gradually increase the Medicare eligibility age by one month each year. In the long run, the eligibility ages for both programs will be indexed to longevity so that they increase only as fast as life expectancy."

Under current law, the age for collecting full Social Security benefits is gradually rising from 65 to 67. Medicare is available at age 65. In both cases, the age is set in law, and Romney's suggestion that it be tied automatically to increases in the life expectancy of Americans would mark a major change.

He spoke in the run-up to a pair of primaries that mark his latest tests as he tries to break free of Rick Santorum and his other persistent but underfunded rivals in the presidential race.

He is widely expected to win Arizona. Neither he nor his rivals is airing television ads in the state, a reliable sign that all sides view it as a closed case.

Although public and private polls in Michigan show Romney has erased much or all of an earlier deficit, he still faces a stiff challenge from Santorum in the state, where the disparity in television advertising is not as overwhelmingly in Romney's favor has it has been elsewhere.

It is an unwritten rule of Michigan politics that presidential candidates appear before the Detroit Economic Club. Santorum addressed the group several days ago, and officials familiar with the details said Newt Gingrich's camp had been in discussions for an appearance as late as last week. A spokesman for the former House speaker did not respond to a request for comment.

Romney's commitment caused a spike in interest, and as a result, the former governor spoke in the huge stadium. He stood on a makeshift stage set up on the 35-yard line, with his audience on the stadium floor ringed by thousands of empty stadium seats. Goalpost uprights were visible above the black draping that served as his backdrop. United Auto Workers protested outside.

The event's optics were widely criticized. When asked who chose the venue, Romney's campaign pointed to a letter from the Detroit Economic Club citing the 1,200-person crowd. The club blamed security concerns for moving the event from an atrium inside the stadium complex down onto the field. The Secret Service provides Romney's security.

Later Friday, Romney campaigned deep into more conservative western Michigan, headlining a rally at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo after stopping at a restaurant in Mount Clemens.

Santorum, meanwhile, intensified his effort to score an upset on what amounts to Romney's political home field.

The former Pennsylvania senator greeted parishioners Friday at a packed Catholic Church fish-fry dinner in Walled Lake, Mich., and then spoke for 55 minutes to a small crowd in the Detroit suburb of Lincoln Park.

Santorum said Romney's plan to limit tax deductions for charitable gifts by high-income people would hurt churches and civic groups. He called for sharp cuts in federal spending and regulations, and new restrictions on government entitlement programs that he said make Americans dependent on government. These were parts of his "economic freedom agenda," which he plans to enact in his first 100 days in office.

By contrast, Romney rarely strays from economic issues as he presses his case that as a former businessman he is best equipped to help restore an economy still recovering from the worst recession in decades.

"I not only think I have the best chance. I think I have the only chance" of defeating Obama, Romney told his midday audience, although he quickly added with a nervous-sounding laugh, "Maybe I'm overstating it a bit."

While aides earlier had touted the speech as a major economic address, Romney seemed to pre-empt himself earlier in the week when he called for across-the-board income tax cuts of 20 percent to help the economy grow and begin creating jobs in large numbers.

He repeated that proposal, along with his calls to cut the corporate income tax rate and abolish the estate tax.

On Medicare, Romney also supports changing the program to give beneficiaries a choice between the traditional setup and one in which the government provides them with a monthly payment that can be used to purchase private coverage.

"With these commonsense changes, we will have fixed our balance sheet," Romney said. "Instead of $62 trillion in unfunded commitments hanging over America's future, we'll have a balance sheet that is actually in balance."

In all there are 30 Republican National Convention delegates at stake in Michigan next week, 29 in Arizona.

Don't Look Back ? From Radio To Internet - Radio-Info.com

podcastingThe online radio show ? successful professional broadcasters are making the move to online broadcasting.
?
"You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream? ?C.S.Lewis

A lot of talented, experienced broadcast professionals now choose to do their shows online rather than on-air. The beauty of podcasting, or doing your show live on the internet, is that no one has to "hire you." If you?ve got a microphone and a computer you?re good to go.
?
Listeners are following their favorite personalities from radio onto the internet. Because they?re no longer forced to stick to a singular format, hosts are enjoying increased freedom online.? While experienced broadcasters are disciplined and understand the value of working with formatics, doing an online show offers an unmatched opportunity for creativity and experimentation. It?s not radio, it?s not TV, it?s not print. The internet offers all of these elements to enhance the audience?s experience. You can mix audio with visual and interactive components. You can talk, do in-depth interviews, play music, and interact (or not), with your audience.? Working online offers a blank canvas for creative self-expression. (There?s more on this in the chapter on Working Across Multiple Platforms in my book,? "Beyond Powerful Radio ? A Communicator?s Guide to the Internet Age.")
?
In the past, if you lost your job, you lost your means of distribution. You had to find another on-air gig to continue your career, but not anymore.? Now, personalities have the power of distribution in their own hands.
?
One former major market talk host who prefers to remain anonymous says, "After years of ratings success, there was a corporate takeover and I lost my job ...? In the beginning, of my career, I?d moved a lot, living in six different cities. Now I?ve got a family, my kids are in school, we own our home and we?re an active part of a community we love. My wife has a stable job, so for us, moving again wasn?t an option.?

"I had no luck when I applied everywhere in town for another radio job. At that point, I thought it was 'game over.?? But I?d amassed a sizable listener email data base. When my job ended, I sent out a note to that list, with my online contact information, saying, I?d be in touch with news of my next gig.? But I was going crazy not working, so I started a podcast. I let my listeners know where to find it and using social media, built from there.?

"Creatively, it was like being given wings.? No program director cramming mandatory topics down your throat.? When my unique downloads hit 25,000, I contacted former radio sponsors and offered them access to my targeted audience at a much lower rate than they?d been paying for their on-air spots. Several said ?OK, we?ll try it? ? which was great.? The show continues to grow and it's making money."
?
If you want to preserve one of the historically wonderful things about talk radio ? interactivity?you can put in a dedicated phone line and take callers live as you stream.? If you prefer to pre-record your show you can still use the ?comments? section on your site, giving your audience the opportunity to enter the conversation.? A huge advantage of podcasting is that you control your time. You can do your show when it?s convenient, then send a text or email to listeners when it?s posted.
?
Most notable for moving his "radio show" to the internet is Adam Carolla, who, after three years of hosting the Adam Carolla Show online, now averages around 2 million downloads a week. (The Guinness Book of World Records calls his show the most downloaded podcast ever.)? Carolla?s former employer, CBS Radio, now reps his site.
?
But it's not just individual personalities enjoying success online, whole entire radio stations have moved over. Audiences in British Columbia, Canada have embraced online-only channel: "Castanet," which serves the local resort community of Kelowna.
?
Other hosts use their online platform to pursue journalistic interests. Twelve years ago, with foresight and a desire to control content, former KABC Los Angeles talk show host Bill Pearl founded an online newspaper. LBReport.com, featuring? investigative reporting, covering Pearl?s town of Long Beach, California.
?
This same independent spirit applies to former radio personalities from a variety of radio formats. Some are having so much fun that one internet station isn?t enough. Former Kansas City talk show host George Kaywood was so enthusiastic, he developed and created online content in a variety of formats. You can hear them on www.radiogeorge.com.
?
BACK TO RADIO?
?
Canadian radio talk hosts Paul and Carol Mott, moved their talk show online and back to the airwaves again.? After leaving traditional radio, their online show, "The Motts" was so successful, that now, it's been picked up by a few stations.
?
And that?s happening a lot.? For ten years in Los Angeles, personality Barbara Blake was synonymous with the ?Smooth Jazz Sunday Brunch,? a live broadcast she hosted on KTWV "The Wave." After she left "the Wave" two years ago, Blake moved her show online to www.smoothjazzsundaybrunch.com. Blake's show is a case in point of a personality breaking format restrictions by combining elements of both music and talk radio.Today she?s got sponsors and a sizable international following with a niche audience of those who share her world view, enjoy her original content and artist interviews and are fans of smart, smooth jazz.? Blake hears regularly from radio stations asking if they can broadcast her programming.
?
Online radio shows are nothing if not diverse. Former Seattle Country personality Ichabod Caine and his partner Scallops host Wild Boar Radio.

Their name makes the point that they are free-form, not locked into any single format: Wild B.O.A. R. stands for ?Best Of All Radio.?
?
Howard Hoffman, formerly of? KABC Los Angeles, now combines his thriving voice-over career with internet radio on his site: Great Big Radio.
?
If you're thinking of moving your show online and need tech support, consider hiring your favorite radio station engineer. There are also several books, websites and organizations that can assist as well, such as www.Blogtalkradio.com and www.podcastanswerman.com.
?
THE PAYOFF
?
As with any entrepreneurial venture, you're responsible for overseeing every aspect of your business, including marketing, promotion and sales, and whether you do it all yourself or hire someone to help.

For sponsors and listeners alike, the Internet is a perfect sales environment for special interest or niche formats. Your audience is global ? so you can generate a huge following. If you?re not comfortable selling, find someone who is and who recognizes you have something unique to market.? No matter how obscure the theme of your show, say you host a talk show for people with overweight, aging cats - if it?s a good show, it will find an audience.
