Finding a Home for Those with Chronic Mental Illness

This article has been viewed 52 times.

For individuals who have a family member or shut friend with a power psychological illness, life can be filled with challenges. Chronic mental illness takes its toll on households, who often do not have the coaching or emotional sources to adequately care for his or her cherished ones. It?s troublesome to navigate the waters of the authorized and psychological health care programs, and doubly troublesome to discover a good home for a beloved one with a psychological sickness who cannot live on his or her own.

Despite a family?s dedication and willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure that their mother, father, brother, or sister receives the care he or she needs, it is not always clear what housing and care options are available or suitable. Here, then, is an evaluation of six of the most common varieties of housing and care available for these with a persistent mental illness.

Nursing Homes: Because those that are mentally unwell typically are in want of lengthy-term medical care, there are times when a nursing home is likely to be vital or appropriate. Nonetheless, many nursing properties aren?t outfitted to adequately address mental health care issues. When selecting a nursing residence for a loved one, make sure that it specializes in serving these with persistent mental illness.

Residential Care Amenities: Most individuals with power psychological sickness receive the suitable stage of care in residential care facilities. Usually, they supply 24-hour staffing, room and board, and assistance with medications and scheduling psychological well being care appointments. These sorts of services are typically not locked.

Adult Care Services: Grownup care services are extra household oriented than residential care services, but usually present the same degree of care. They are extra acceptable for these whose circumstances are stable. Adult care amenities aren?t locked, and a few don?t present 24-hour staffing.

Family Care Homes: The household care residence setting is extra of a typical dwelling in that it serves an a lot smaller variety of residents and is not generally staffed 24 hours a day. Sadly, many subsidies for these will chronic psychological illness will cowl this level of care, although the individuals may have the companies of an grownup care or residential care facility.

Assisted Living Items: An assisted living unit, as its title implies, is most appropriate for those people who are high functioning and stable. With assisted dwelling, there may be minimal staff supervision and residents typically live in residences and obtain services like meals, laundry, and medication supervision. Assisted residing will also be a bridge to independent dwelling, in that if someone efficiently participates in assisted residing for a 12 months, she or he might be able to transition to a standard apartment.

Psychiatric Items: Psychiatric items are either primarily based in or affiliated with hospitals. One sort of psychiatric unit makes a speciality of quick-time period acute care, most frequently when a person is a hazard to himself or herself, or others. The objective in this scenario is to stabilize the person and transfer her or him to a different form of facility. The other kind of psychiatric unit is one that?s affiliated with a state hospital, and is usually a locked facility for these needing longer-term care.

Home Improvement Outlets To Provide The Best Price ...

When you?re thinking about doing a home improvement project, you probably envision going to one of the big named stores, such as Lowes or Home Depot. However, those stores often have higher prices than many of the mom and pop shops or even home improvement outlet stores.

These home improvement outlet stores can provide you with everything you need without breaking your wallet like any of the big named stores will. There are lots of home improvement outlet stores, just as there are many huge, big named stores that offer home improvement tools, supplies and more.

Shop Around

Don?t just stop into your local home improvement outlet store and start shopping. It would be better to compare prices, especially with food and gas prices the way they are today. Wouldn?t you like to get as many home improvement tools, supplies and everything else you need while also saving money? Of course you would.

So whether you?re shopping at Lowes, Home Depot, one of the other big named stores, or a home improvement outlet store; compare prices so that you can save as much money as possible.

Bigger is Not Always Better

You may be thinking that the big named stores are big because they?re better. That?s just not the case, however. Home improvement outlet stores are often staffed by people who are more helpful and more knowledgeable. These people truly care about you and your needs.

Because they may not get as much business, or do as much advertising, as the other big names, they need and respect your business. So they?ll often go that extra mile in order to satisfy you. That?s just one of the many benefits of shopping at a home improvement outlet store.

Improving Your Home

When you stop into a home improvement outlet store, you should already have your project in mind. Are you building a new addition onto your home? Are you adding on or are you redoing a certain room? However, sometimes it?s fun to just come up with a project on the spot as you spy a certain item on the shelf at the home improvement outlet store.

Your projects that you want to do are up to your know how, your budget and what the home improvement outlet stores have in stock. Have fun and congratulations on your motivation to improve your home. You?ll increase your property value and you?ll also feel as though you just moved into a brand new dream home.

ND president protests birth control inclusion (AP)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. ? President Barack Obama's health care overhaul should be changed so that religious school's such as the University of Notre Dame aren't required to go against their beliefs and provide birth control to students and employees, the school president says.

The Rev. John Jenkins wrote a letter Wednesday to Kathleen Sebelius asking the Obama administration to broaden the definition of religious employer currently under consideration to ensure the school can continue its provide health care without going against the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. He said the change in definition of religious employer is far narrower than current law and would require Notre Dame and other Catholic universities to offer prescription contraceptives and sterilization services to students and employees through health care plans.

"This would compel Notre Dame to either pay for contraception and sterilization in violation of the church's moral teaching, or to discontinue our employee and student health care plans in violation of the church's social teaching. It is an impossible position," he wrote.

A panel of health experts advising the administration last month recommended that the government require health insurance companies to cover birth control for women as preventive care, without copayments. The Health and Human Services Department asked for public comment on its proposed conscience clause. Jenkins was writing in response to that request.

Jenkins, who was criticized by dozens of bishops for inviting President Barack Obama to speak at commencement, noted that during Obama's commencement speech at Notre Dame in May 2009 he said he favored "a sensible conscience clause." Obama said the clause would give anti-abortion health care providers the right to refuse to perform the procedure.

Jenkins said the proposed change in law "runs contrary to a 40-year history of federal conscience statutes" and doesn't reflect the sensible approach Obama talked about in his speech at Notre Dame.

Jenkins urged Sebelius to change the definition of religious employer to the one used by the Internal Revenue Service, which considers whether an organization or institution shares common religious bonds and convictions with a church.

"This definition more adequately defines religious employers to include all organizations that work in ministries of the church," he wrote.

Betty Cockrum, Planned Parenthood of Indiana president and CEO, said that covering birth control without copays is one of the most important steps in preventing unintended pregnancy.

"That's why Planned Parenthood will continue to work hard to ensure that all women, regardless of their employer or insurer, have access to the health care they need, including affordable birth control," she said.

Tomlin: Steelers "not perfect by any stretch"

Mike Tomlin, Ben Roethlisberger

By WILL GRAVES

updated 3:13 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2011

PITTSBURGH - Marcus Gilbert and Doug Legursky's left shoulders appear to be OK. Maybe. Jonathan Scott's left ankle remains tender but not terrible. Probably.

Still, if you're an out-of-work offensive lineman, there could be a call from the Pittsburgh Steelers in your near future.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday the Steelers are "open to looking to maybe bring someone in" this week to provide the team with some much-needed depth after three starters had to be helped off the field during Sunday night's 23-20 victory over Indianapolis.

Tomlin stressed the team is looking for depth, not someone to show up on Wednesday and be ready to play in Sunday's game at Houston.

"It would just be for practice purposes only," Tomlin said.

At least, as of now. Given the perpetual state of flux the line has been for the last two seasons, Tomlin knows it's too early to rule anything out.

If Scott can't go, veteran Trai Essex ? signed off the street earlier this month ? will be in charge of protecting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's blind side at left tackle against the Texans (2-1).

His job? Try and hold off a Houston pass rush led by Mario Williams. Not exactly the player the Steelers want to see after allowing Indianapolis defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis wreak havoc in the backfield in front of a national audience, sacking Ben Roethlisberger three times and forcing him to put it on the ground twice.

Tomlin gave credit to Freeney and Mathis rather than point fingers at his players, though he acknowledges the line needs to get better if the Steelers want to take some of the pressure off Roethlisberger.

The running game is 20th in the league in yards per game (85.7) and 26th in yards per attempt (3.3). Not exactly the formula the franchise typically uses to win games.

Tomlin would like the offense to be more balanced but refuses to place blame on the line or running back Rashard Mendenhall.

"We're still very much a team in development in that area," he said. "I'm trying not to frame it."

Plugging holes along the line is almost an annual challenge for the Steelers. They did it with aplomb last year, using seven different starting combinations en route to a Super Bowl appearance.

If Scott can't play, the line will have its fourth different lineup in as many games.

There haven't been nearly as many injuries on defense, and there's proof the Steelers are starting to round into shape after getting whipped in Baltimore in the season opener.

Pittsburgh shutout lifeless Seattle and held the Colts to 241 yards even though Indianapolis managed a late touchdown drive to tie the game at 20 behind lightly experienced backup quarterback Curtis Painter.

The defense could get a boost on Sunday if defensive end Brett Keisel's sprained knee continues to improve. Keisel sat out last week, though third-year man Ziggy Hood held his own.

Though Tomlin says the run defense could be better, the Steelers have been solid against the pass, allowing a mere 164 yards per game. Linebacker James Harrison continues to round into form as he comes back from a pair of offseason back surgeries, registering a sack and forced fumble that safety Troy Polamalu returned for a touchdown.

Tomlin laughed when asked if there's evidence the 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year appears to be getting healthier.

"He's a sandbagger," Tomlin said, "we expect that."

The Steelers also expect their turnover problems to end. Pittsburgh is minus-9 through three games, easily the worst turnover ratio in the league.

Despite the mistakes, they're still 2-1 on the season. The miscues, while highly visible, haven't damaged the season. Yet.

"We were not perfect by any stretch," Tomlin said. "We're very much a team in development ... but it's encouraging to see necessary plays in all three phases of the game."

How would you change HTC's Droid Incredible 2?

It's borderline crazy to think that we posed this very question about the original Droid Incredible in June of 2010, yet here we are again. Same question, different day, and (mostly) different phone. Verizon Wireless has been pumping out Android devices like it's its job -- and really, it sort of is -- and HTC's DI2 is certainly one of the more polarizing options. Loaded with Sense and plenty of VZW "extras," we're anxious to see if the things that bothered us also bothered you. Is the screen size adequate? Are you still better off with Sense than without? Would you change the form factor or software in any way for the inevitable third iteration? Holler in comments below -- we're all ears.

How would you change HTC's Droid Incredible 2? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 22:32:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Cordless Screw Driver ? A Should-Have Device For Repair And ...

A cordless screwdriver is a tool designed to penetrate a screw into a certain material. For example, you may need to penetrate a screw inside a small chunk of wood. For this to take place, you have to drill into the wood and affix the screw inside it by using a screwdriver; but what about the cordless screwdriver. What is it, and how can you benefit from choosing it over a regular screwdriver? To find out, read this article about it.

A cordless screwdriver is different from a regular screwdriver because it makes use of batteries. There are actually plenty of screwdrivers that are powered by electricity, but the cordless screwdriver uses batteries. It features a number of identical bits including flat blades, head, and socket attachments.

Do you know which one is more important: the speed or the torque? The answer is the torque. You have to rotate the screw that?s why it is more important. In order for the screw to be anchored properly, it has to penetrate the layers of the wood well. A regular screwdriver may be able to do this; but when the wood is a harder kind, it might be difficult for a regular screwdriver to drill into it. So, what you need is a cordless screwdriver that can tighten the screw efficiently.

However, to be able to penetrate the screw properly, the cordless screwdriver should be fully charged. These screwdrivers are mostly capable of working manually or working with batteries. You can use your cordless screwdriver like a regular screwdriver if you want; but if you need to create more torque, then you should power it with batteries.

Do you know what the biggest advantage of a cordless screwdriver is? Its biggest advantage is its reversibility. You can actually use it and apply torque in reverse order. When you drill a screw into a piece of wood or any other material, it will eventually rust and might even get damaged. Hence, it will be very difficult to pull out. However, if you use a cordless screwdriver, you will be able to take it out easily. Just apply torque in reverse direction and pretty soon, the screw will be pulled out.

Also, you will be able to avoid certain problems brought by repetitive motion. Turning screws repetitively can put stress on your arm and hand muscles. Your shoulders will also get tired and sore from manually using the screwdriver. When you use a cordless screwdriver, on the other hand, you can prevent hand exhaustion. You will also feel safer and relaxed because it is more efficient than a regular screwdriver. It may even be able to reach tight spaces when turning screws. You will not get hurt or injured from constant bumping in uncomfortable workplaces.

A cordless screwdriver is one of the most versatile, practical, and handy tools any person should have. It is ideal to be used for reconstructing, deconstructing, or a variety of do-it-yourself projects. It can be used at home or at your workplace. It is truly an amazing tool to own that?s why it is recommended that you learn how to use it.

Mr. Fenstermacher lives with his family in Germany. His profession is an educator but likes to do on do-it-yourself projects during his leisure time. His favorite equipment are Makita Akkuschrauber and Metabo Akkuschrauber because of their handiness and versatility.

Chest in the Crockpot

One of flesh is a favorite of my daughter's chest. He loved his chest since he was a child. When I was little, my mother threw on breast cancer in the oven a little "of this and a little bit," that in the pot. While my daughter has loved the end result was almost impossible for me to copy the recipe.

Today, if I have a chest, which almost always do with my crockpot. The chest is a piece of meat should cook for several hours anyway, sowhy not in the crockpot where he will remain wet and absorb all the flavors add cooking?

One of the sauces I make includes ketchup, sauce and onion soup mix Worchestshire. I mix them all together and then instead of adding water, add either Coke or 7-Up, depending on what I have at home. Add soda adds a little "sweet taste of the mixture of ketchup. I put the meat on the floor and then add the sauce on top. I then the crockpot and cook on lowup to eight hours.

Another recipe I like is a breast of blueberries. This recipe requires a bit of groundwork before you can put the ingredients in the crockpot. Sautee chopped two onions, two sticks of celery, two carrots, chopped garlic cloves finely chopped garlic and four. Once soft, add a can of whole berry cranberry sauce. Stir and remove from heat. Depending on the size of my chest, I sometimes brown chest before in the crockpot. When the breast is small, about 3 pounds or less, I skip the process of gilding. Place the breasts in crockpot, add the sauce and then down to eight hours.

Both recipes are great if I work all day. I have the crockpot before you leave, and the meat is tender and ready when I come home from work. We serve the breast or with rice or potatoes and a hot vegetable oil. This makes a great meal that is very easy to useprepare.

Real Estate for Rent Sydney and Apartment for Rent Sydney ...

In the modern world of today, building a new house is not only expensive; it also has all the hassles that come along with it. Finding a good land is already trouble enough especially in big cities where most lots are already bought by huge businessmen planning to build all sorts of establishments in the city?s center. That is why if you do find a lot, it is often far from the city?s center thus making it more costly in the long run as you spend much for transportation. And if you find a land, you would then be planning for the house, having an engineer draw the plan, requesting for a permit to build it, buying all the necessary materials and finally the day-to-day labor you need to spend money for. Truly, building a new home can bring a lot of troubles.

And because of all these trouble, many have decided not to build a new house for their own. Most often, if they have enough money, they find houses for sale and buy them. But if you do not have enough budgets, you may find houses whose owners have decided to sell them for a fraction of its original price. Not your typical dream house but you can definitely call it home.

Bahrain holds vote as Shi'ite enclave erupts (Reuters)

MANAMA (Reuters) ? Bahrain's main opposition boycotted elections on Saturday held to fill parliamentary seats that were vacated by its members during a crackdown on a mostly Muslim Shi'ite protest movement in the Sunni-ruled monarchy.

The low turn-out of voters would appear to favor pro-government candidates in the Gulf island state, home to the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet.

As evening fell, the Shi'ite enclave of Sanabis adjacent to the capital of Manama, erupted for a second night. Youths taunted police with vuvuzelas and anti-government chants.

Police responded with rubber bullets and stun grenades, according to a Reuters witness.

Shi'ites, who form Bahrain's majority community, took to the streets in February to demand more representation and access to jobs and benefits.

At least 30 people were killed, hundreds wounded and more than 1,000 detained in a government crackdown backed by troops brought in from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Wefaq opposition reacted by quitting 18 of the 20 seats in parliament and was boycotting Saturday's election, saying that government efforts at reconciliation failed to address the Shi'ites' grievances.

Jalil al-Alli, one of two candidates running for a seat in the Shi'ite town of Saar, said he was standing because it was "better to work with the system than not."

"I felt that running would be in the interests of the people. We need to monitor ministers and tackle issues like unemployment."

Four seats out of the 18 were uncontested so Saturday's vote is for 14 seats in a parliament with limited powers.

LOWER TURNOUT

"I don't think Bahrain is ready for a stronger parliament," said candidate Jamal Saleh, a Sunni Muslim, who was at a polling station in a shopping mall in a pro-opposition district.

The presiding judge at the polling station, Amal Ahmed Abdul, said voter turnout was lower than usual but those who had turned out were enthusiastic.

"People are insisting on their right to vote even if they don't find their name on the list," Abdul said. "They are going back to officials and investigating to make sure there is a place they can vote."

Despite its Shi'ite majority, Bahrain is governed by the Sunni al-Khalifa dynasty, which allies Saudi Arabia and the United States regard as a bulwark against the regional influence of Shi'ite power Iran.

Bahrain's parliament has limited powers as its bills need to pass an upper house whose members are appointed by the king. Ultimate power in the country rests with the ruling family.

Matar Matar, a Wefaq member who resigned in February over deaths of protesters and was jailed for several months, said the low turnout was not because of the boycott.

"It's more to do with the atmosphere where people are angry about ongoing violations, excessive use of force with protesters, dismissals from work, difficulties getting wounded protesters to health centres," Matar said.

"All these seats were Wefaq seats and these people will fill the void but lack credibility. The authorities will say they reflect the silent majority but they are in denial. This election is just making the country's crisis worse."

ARAB SPRING LINKS

On the eve of the election, police blocked protesters trying to march to the capital Manama, cutting off roads to Sanabis and Bahrain Financial Harbour, which flank the central roundabout that was the center of the protests seven months ago.

Earlier, Sanabis had been littered with debris with riot police present in large numbers. "We don't believe in this election, so we've been trying to protest since yesterday," said a woman who gave her name as Umm Haider.

In a speech on Friday, Wefaq leader Sheikh Ali Salman likened the protest movement to those that have swept other Arab countries this year.

"The conflict in Bahrain is between those who want freedom and democracy and those who support dictatorship, as is the case in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya and Syria," he said. "Our demands are for freedom and justice, and if we achieve that, it will be for the better of citizens -- Sunnis and Shia."

Since the height of the unrest the government has struggled to restore its image as a business-friendly Gulf hub, launching a national dialogue in July to discuss reforms.

Wefaq also pulled out of that forum, calling it a charade after the opposition bloc was accorded only 35 seats out of 300.

Based on the talks, King Hamad agreed to expand the elected lower house's powers of scrutiny. But the appointed upper council, the Shura, was left untouched.

Hurricane Hilary blamed for 3 deaths in Mexico (AP)

ACAPULCO, Mexico ? Hurricane Hilary moved away from Mexico's southwestern coast in the Pacific as a powerful Category 4 storm Friday, and search teams recovered the bodies of three fishermen caught in the storm.

The hurricane was not forecast to make landfall, but Mexico's coast has been being affected by wind, rain and heavy surf from Hilary, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The three fishermen, ages 27 to 50, went out to sea Thursday night despite a hurricane warning advising against it, Guerrero state's Public Safety Department said.

Navy rescue crews found the bodies Friday in the waters off the town of Marquelia. They had tied themselves to empty gasoline containers, the department said.

Hilary's maximum sustained winds late Friday were near 145 mph (230 kph). The hurricane was centered about 160 miles (260 kilometers) south of Manzanillo, Mexico, and was moving west at near 9 mph (15 kph).

All tropical storm watches and warnings that had been in place for Mexico's coast were discontinued as forecasters predicted the storm would keep moving away from Mexico.

In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Ophelia had winds near 50 mph (85 kph) and was not a threat to land.

This post was meant to be about an old-school CRPG that has been in devel?op?ment (by some accounts) for over 15 years. After research?ing it for a while, I decided the wildly con?flict?ing infor?ma?tion, accu?sa?tions, and inter?net insan?ity relat?ing to that game made it a bit too? bizarre for me. I?ll just leave a link to that game?s blog here, and let you check it out for yourselves.

Instead I?ve decided to cover Pro?teus today.

In its cur?rent form, Pro?teus is a game about explo?ration. A quite, med?i?ta?tive expe?ri?ence of wan?der?ing through strange, alien land?scapes that are nev?er?the?less very famil?iar. Pro?ce?du?rally gen?er?ated worlds are laid out before the player with clean, sim?ple pixel graph?ics in a 3D envi?ron?ment. I?d like to tell you more about the game, about some of the fan?tas?tic things you may come across in the game world, but I think it?s bet?ter to let the player dis?cover these for them?selves. About all you can really do is run around, look at things, and take lovely lit?tle screen?shots, all while lis?ten?ing to the calm?ing and beau?ti?ful of David Kahaga. I would strongly encour?age fans of exper?i?men?tal elec?tronic music to check out his?site!

At an ear?lier point, Ed Key had men?tioned that Pro?teus would be a lite RPG game, sim?i?lar in some respects to Mor?rowind, but in pro?ce?du?rally gen?er?ated worlds and not nearly as com?plex. I?m not sure how much that will play into the final build of the game as it stands now, and despite my mas?sive love of Mor?rowind I?m not sure it needs to have such fea?tures. This is thus far about some?thing slower, some?thing more men?tal and less vis?ceral, and I like it that?way.

Pro?teus also recently made it into the finals for IndieCade, and by what I?ve seen and tried of the many excel?lent final?ists, it fits in well with these highly imag?i?na?tive?games.

You can down?load a very early build of the game here.

And you can check out the developer?s blog here.

And finally, the game?s actual site, which is just a pretty place?holder at the moment, but will hope?fully expand soon.

(AP) ? Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad pressed on Saturday despite painful stings from a Portuguese Man o' War and a visit from a curious shark, completing nearly half her journey from Cuba to Florida.

More than 24 hours after setting off from a Havana marina, Nyad was 49 miles (79 kilometers) from the Cuban coast and stroking through favorably calm waters, her team said. She is hoping to swim 103 miles (166 kms) to Florida, besting her own record for an open-water crossing without a shark cage by about a half-mile (1 km).

Nyad's assistants, who are updating fans and well-wishers around the world via social media, downplayed the afternoon encounter with the finned predator.

"Around 1pm ? and don't everybody get excited here ? an Oceanic white tipped shark was spotted near Diana in the midst of the three boat flotilla. ... Rob MacDonald, one of (her safety) divers, swam towards the shark, where they faced off within 10 feet of one another," read a post on Nyad's website.

"I guess he thought I was more aggressive than him, and he turned in the other direction," MacDonald was quoted as saying.

Barracudas were also spotted in her general vicinity.

Without a cage to protect her, Nyad is relying on equipment surrounding her with an electrical field that is harmless but deters most sharks. Her divers are there to gently discourage any who make it through.

Nyad's nighttime run-in with the Portuguese Man o' War, described as "scary," left her with stings on her face, arms and side.

Complaining of difficulty breathing, she received oxygen and a steroid shot from her doctors and tread water while she recovered.

When she resumed swimming her handlers noted that her stroke count had dropped to 48 per minute, down from 52-55, but as the day went on she picked up the pace.

"This afternoon ? it is stunning to actually witness ? Diana is swimming stronger and stronger," her website read. "Her strokes are up to 50 per minute, she is eating pasta, gobbling bananas, bits of peanut butter sandwiches, along with high-carb & high calorie liquid concoctions."

Her website reported that she seemed to revive significantly after consuming blended chicken soup.

The Los Angeles woman pauses every 45 and 90 minutes to rest and refuel on food that her assistants pass to her in the water, but without getting on the boat.

As the sun set, a different kind of encounter with marine life was more pleasant.

"At 7:10pm, on the crimson horizon of the Straits of Florida, ten pilot whales emerged in the distance just ahead of Diana," said a tweet.

Her team said a critical phase of the swim was beginning, as an observer on the boat said marathon swimmers are more likely to succeed if they make it through the second night.

Nyad says her strategy for enduring the roughly 60 hours it should take her to swim from Cuba to Florida, testing the limits of human exhaustion at the age of 62, is to focus on one partial goal after another.

"The mental approach has to be to parcel it out. No one could swim the whole thing while thinking about the whole thing," she said on her website. "Till I get a glimpse of the final shore I can't start obsessing on it ? it's too far away, too nebulous ? I don't know where it is. So I'm going to take it night by day: first get through the nighttime and then get through the daytime, and then the nighttime again, and so on."

She told reporters Friday in Havana that she likes to sing songs inside her head to pass the hours. Among her favorites: The Beatles, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan.

Nyad is making her second attempt in as many months at the Cuba-Florida crossing, a lifelong dream that she first tried as a 28-year-old back in 1978, when she swam inside a steel shark cage for about 42 hours before ending the attempt.

A cageless attempt this August fell short 29 hours in when, gasping for breath, Nyad threw in the towel after an 11-hour asthma attack she blamed on a bad reaction to a new medicine.

But she said the experience did not convince her that she was physically not up to the challenge, and Nyad, who insisted the problems had nothing to do with her age, came to think of the aborted swim not as a failure but an unplanned dress rehearsal.

Though she had vowed there would be no second attempt, this week she flew to Cuba to take advantage of what she called a "magical window" of good weather and sea conditions.

Nyad, who expects to lose about 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms) on the crossing, hopes to make landfall in Florida around Monday morning.

Alabama carries out third U.S. execution this week (Reuters)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (Reuters) ? A man convicted of the 1994 execution-style shooting of a store clerk in Alabama was put to death on Thursday by lethal injection in the third U.S. execution carried out this week.

Derrick O'Neal Mason, 37, was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m. local time at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Department of Corrections spokesman Grantt Culliver said. Mason had spent 16 years on death row.

The execution followed two high-profile lethal injections this week in Georgia and Texas. In a case that drew international attention, Troy Davis was put to death in Georgia on Wednesday for the murder of a police officer despite claims by his advocates that he may have been innocent.

Also on Wednesday, Texas executed a white supremacist convicted of helping to kill a black man by dragging him behind a truck, a case that sparked a wave of hate crime laws.

Mason was the fifth inmate executed in Alabama this year, and the 36th in the United States in 2011. He did not request a last meal and told prison staff he was fasting, Culliver said.

Mason was convicted of killing 25-year-old Angela Cagle during the attempted robbery of a convenience store in Huntsville, Alabama. Authorities said he forced Cagle to strip naked and shot her twice in the face at close range.

Mason apologized to the victim's family and thanked his own before the lethal drugs were administered. Four of Cagle's family members witnessed the execution.

"We'll miss Angie until we see her in heaven," her family said in a written statement. "We are grateful for the prayers and support we have received in these 17-1/2 years in dealing with having her ripped from our lives but never from our hearts."

JUDGE HAD ASKED GOVERNOR TO SPARE MASON

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said on Wednesday he would not intervene to halt the execution. Earlier this month, the judge who sentenced Mason to death asked Bentley to spare the inmate's life.

In a September 8 letter, Judge Loyd Little Jr. did not dispute that Mason "terrorized the victim." But he wrote that if he had tried the case as a more experienced jurist, he would have sentenced Mason to life without the possibility of parole.

Neither Little nor the defense team had any experience in capital murder cases before the Mason trial, the judge said.

Little said that compared to other cases he presided over later, this one was not as "heinous, atrocious, or cruel."

The judge wrote that without that aggravating factor to consider, the jury "would have recommended life without parole and I would have followed that recommendation."

In court filings, appellate attorneys for Mason argued that his defense team omitted key mitigating factors during the sentencing phase, including his claim that he smoked a marijuana cigarette the night of the crime that, unknown to him, was laced with psychoactive substances.

In a court filing to the state Supreme Court on Wednesday, Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange quoted the judge's sentencing remarks about the heinous nature of the crime.

Strange concluded that the judge's "change of heart is not a basis for this court to grant Mason's petition for a stay of execution."

The GOP debate: 6 takeaways (Politico)

It?s official ? the frontrunners aren?t a mutual fan club.

With three debates in the books featuring Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, the animosity between the Texas governor and the former Massachusetts governor is palpable.

Here are POLITICO?s six takeaways from Thursday?s slugfest in Orlando:

Rick Perry is not ready

For debating, anyway. Fortunately for him, there?s a brief lull where he can improve his game in time for the mid-October New Hampshire and Las Vegas face-offs.

But the concern for Perry after three weak debate performances - each one messier than the last - is that primary voters may soon start deciding he?s not ready for Barack Obama either.

Perry simply couldn?t get it done in his third outing on stage with the same rivals he?s faced before (and, for the first time, a giggly Gary Johnson).

Just like at the CNN/Tea Party Express debate - and before another Florida crowd that was prepared to welcome him - the Texas governor seemed ill-prepared, couldn?t land his punches, and he again sagged visibly toward the end, struggling even through a canned slap at Mitt Romney?s flip-flops.

His vague, tripping-across-Asia answer on a hypothetical question about getting the proverbial 3 A.M. call warning of a nuclear-armed Pakistani Taliban regime, won?t make anyone feel safer with him at the helm.

But his comments on immigration will be the ones that are most remembered. During a multi-candidate pile-on, Perry sounded a leftward tone when he suggested people who disagree with him on a particular pro-immigrant policy are lacking a ?heart.?

He also stuck by his stand against a border fence, in an exchange in which former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum got the better of him. And his one moment that came close to standing out in a good way - being ?lobbied? on the HPV vaccine by a dying 31-year-old - turns out to have been inaccurate.

All of it will serve to harden questions about Perry?s durability. And it raises the stakes for how he performs at the Presidency Five straw poll in Florida on Saturday.

Mitt Romney found an answer to the flip-flopper questions

It?s called Rick Perry.

Romney sought to turn his opponent?s straight-talking strength into a weakness by questioning whether Perry himself was the true flip-flopper.

Romney?s simply better at the debate game and it showed in various exchanges with Perry.

?Nice try,? was Romney?s rebuttal to Perry at two different points, before he turned the question to his advantage.

He didn?t take the chunk he wanted out of Perry on the issue of Social Security?and he got a bit mealy-mouthed during an answer about whether he supports President Obama?s ?Race to the Top? education initiative. (Suggesting Gary Johnson?s dogs as his running mate wasn?t exactly a home run either).

And there is some level of risk for Romney, who sometimes offers answers that are reminiscent of John Kerry?s ?smart-kid-in-the-class? performances from the 2004 cycle. While his aggressiveness with Perry has generally served him well, when delivered with too much eagerness it can be grating.

Nonetheless, what Romney needs is to steadily advance and hope that Perry sinks, and each debate has been a step toward that goal.

Rick Santorum has eclipsed Michele Bachmann

Of the fighters on the undercard, Santorum was last night?s winner.

Armed with little by way of resources and a mere fourth-place Ames Straw Poll finish, Santorum has nonetheless been taking every opportunity to make himself more of a presence in the GOP race.

On Thursday, he dominated during the parts of the debate when Romney didn?t.

Most contraceptive methods are to create artificial and harmful side effects . Some types of contraception, such as vasectomy and intrauterine devices can disrupt the flow of electromagnetic energy in man or woman, serious long-term consequences for health. For this reason, it is important to have a technique that is less invasive and safer for all parties involved to choose safe sex.

Condoms are the safest non-invasive methods of contraception, especially for women. However, if condoms contain spermicidal lubricant, there may be some irritation of the vaginal walls. Another disadvantage of condoms is the way they act as an artificial barrier, resulting in a slight decrease in sensation, with the energy and trade. Can interfere with

A diaphragm with a spermicidal jelly or cream is a safer means of contraception, against the problems of long-term health related to the pill. Tool Cabinets: Complete Projects And Repairs Faster By Staying ...

Keeping different tools at home are essential to complete some DIY projects faster and easier. More importantly it allows you to do some small home repairs more readily. However, when you have to rummage through a heap of tools every time you need to do this, it can be quite irksome not to mention time-consuming. Consequently, you most likely placed these much needed fixes on the back burner. Unfortunately, this can be quite costly in the long run, leaky pipes for instance.

When you misplace your tools or difficult to find, repairs which you could have done on your own would have to be delegated to professionals which would require more money. In that regard, owning a tool cabinet can certainly work to your advantage, in terms of cost reduction and efficiency.

You can get tool cabinets of various lengths, widths and assembly from your local home improvement center or on the Internet. With so many to choose from, deciding on one can be difficult for some.

These tool organizers can be either premade or made to order. Custom-built tool cabinets are usually made of wood and very often mounted onto the wall of the workshop to free up floor space for other equipment. However, this can be somewhat limiting as you would have to go back and forth to get tools to mend stuff in other parts of the home. In such scenario, having a wheeled tool organizer would make you finish maintenance tasks faster. Most prefab ones are wheeled organizers and are usually made of metal or tough plastic.

Determining how many tools you need to store, and how large these are will help you find the best tool cabinet for your home. Apart from the capacity, it?s also advisable to verify the highest possible mass its compartments and wheels can bear. A number of premade tool cabinets usually have optional add-ons which makes them considerably multi-purpose. To provide an example, a number of these organizers have durable plastic top surfaces and side racks transforming them into workstations. In addition to this, there are also organizers that have scratch-resistant compartments, and compartment partitioning to help you arrange tools more effectively. Resist the urge to buy one with features you don?t need. Avoid being sweet talked by the dealer into purchasing a high-ticket tool cabinet , go through product critiques on the internet particularly those posted by shoppers such as you.

Commercial Real Estate Prices ... - Ketron Property Management, Inc.

Commercial real estate prices increased for the third consecutive month, according to Moody?s/REAL Commercial Property Price Indices. Prices are now similar to levels recorded two years ago.

For the month of July, the National-All Property Type Aggregate Index posted a 5 percent increase. The index is now 12.6 percent above its post-peak low. However, it is 42.5 percent below its peak.

While both distressed and major assets posted slight increases for the month, Moody?s attributed the 5 percent increase to the middle market.

?We view this month?s gain more as a continuation of the bottoming process than as a harbinger of recovery,? says

Tad Philipp, Moody?s director of commercial real estate research. ?We expect the contraction of CMBS lending and stalled employment growth to prolong the bottoming process for the market as a whole.?

Sales of distressed assets made up 28 percent of the market in July. The month marked the 18th consecutive month in which distressed sales made up more than 20 percent of transactions.

Major assets/major markets made up 12 percent of July?s activity, and the remaining 60 percent went to the middle market.

Moody?s recorded 192 repeat-sales observations. This transaction rate is higher than the average monthly rate for the year, which is 181. Both the July count and the year-to-date monthly average are higher than the monthly transaction averages for 2010 and 2009, which are 144 and 96 respectively.

Most notable on a metropolitan level were the increases posted over the last four quarters for New York office properties, San Francisco office properties, and Florida apartments.

New York office property prices rose 25 percent; San Francisco office property prices increased 22.8 percent; and Florida apartment prices rose 22.7 percent.
